Spiritual Rhythm: Being With Jesus Every Season Of Your Soul
By Mark Buchanan
“We need a place that gives life when all around us is desert.”
Well this book is finished. I hope you read it. Or will read it. It is not about the pace of the journey, but making sure you finish it. For me, the last chapter began as the first few. In a word, I can only describe my experience as emotional. Buchanan has such a beautiful way of describing experiences that I have felt. It is possible that his books strike a chord with me because we are both pastors. There are examples he gives that I understand all too well, like a private joke, between an old married couple. Still, I hope you enjoy the flavor of this book. In essence it is all about Jesus. The aim of our lives is to be with Him in every part of our life. We need Jesus in all the seasons of the soul. It might look and feel different to us, but the answer is always the same. Jesus.
The final chapter outlines four activities that are essential to us all in every season. The four activities are; worship, the word of God, prayer and community. After reading the chapter I hope you will give some time considering both your strengths and your weaknesses. My experience is that one or two of these will come naturally, but the others will not. Many prayer warriors have trouble reading the Word. I have met passionate worshippers who struggle with friendship. I have seen people seek out friendship, but are never motivated to pray. Which are you? I encourage you to continue in the activities you are good at, but to also seek help in the ones you are not.
Lastly, as we end this book discussion, I want to encourage you to keep reading. And to comment on your own feelings, successes and struggles. Even if it is a month from now. Keep going. Don’t give up. This last chapter is worth getting there. Let me know what you think and may God bless your reading.
